Claremont McKenna College, or CMC for short, is a private, coeducational liberal arts college and a member of the Claremont Colleges located in Claremont, which is a city in eastern Los Angeles County, in the US state of California, situated at a distance of approximately 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, with a population estimated at a number of more than 37 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census.
CMC was established in 1946, first starting as Claremont Men's College, and mainly provides its students programs in government, economics, and international affairs. It became coeducational in 1946 and got its name from Donald McKenna, a founding trustee, in 1981. Its motto is `Crescit cum commercio civitas`, which means `Civilization prospers with commerce.`
Claremont McKenna's sports teams compete in NCAA Division III and the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, in 19 sports. The men's teams' mascot is Stag and that of the women's is Athena. The teams are, perhaps, best known for their achievements in golf, in which they were ranked first among NCAA Division III teams , by Golf Digest, and 17th overall (including Division 1 schools).
Among CMC's noteworthy alumni, there is Tom Leppert - Mayor of Dallas, Texas, Ashwin Navin - President and co-founder of BitTorrent, Inc., founder of The Claremont Independent, Michael S. Jeffries '66 - Chairman & CEO of Abercrombie & Fitch Co., Thomas Pritzker - Executive Chairman, Hyatt Corporation, and Robin Williams - actor and comedian.
